Outdoor Family Attractions in the Lake District

If you can't get outdoorsy in the Lake District, when can you? Making the most of the weather, come rain or shine, and exploring the natural wonders the UNESCO site has to offer is what it's all about.

After all, this is Mother Nature's playground. One minute, you'll be flying through the trees on a zip wire, and the next, you'll be taking in the breathtaking views on your long hike (with a picnic, of course).

Whether you're looking to entertain your little ones or need to incentivise your family trip to your teenagers (we’ve all been there), here is our list of outdoor activities for the whole family.

Visit Historic Kendal

Just a stone's throw away from Newlands Farm, the historic market town of Kendal should be top of your list. Although it's technically not within the boundaries of the Lake District, it is an excellent gateway town to the Lakes. Perfect for a pit stop on the way.

Known as the 'Auld Grey Town' because of its distinctive grey stone buildings, the heart of the town is anything but dull and dreary.

In fact, the streets are alive with independent shops, restaurants, pubs, and the weekly market, where you'll, of course, find local delicacies like mint cake.

If you're into your history and can find a way to persuade your kids, Kendal Castle is an unmissable ancient ruin dating back to the 12th century.

It's located on a hilltop overlooking the town and offers stunning views of Kendal and the surrounding countryside. The ruins, including the castle keep and gatehouse, can be explored, and informative displays will help you learn about the town's history and the people who lived there.

With settlements dating back to the Bronze Age, you'll feel like you've been transported back to old Britain, so take it in and enjoy the town of Kendal.

Explore Whinlatter Forest

Just a little over an hour away from Newlands, the famed Whinlatter Forest, England's only mountain forest, is the perfect outdoor trip.

From breathtaking views, rewarding walks, exhilarating mountain biking on the longest purpose-built mountain bike trail in the Lake District, and even forest yoga, there's something for everyone in this fantastic forest.

For the little ones, the WildPlay Trail offers swinging, sliding, splashing, and climbing around the forest—ideal for letting off some steam!

If you're an older group, you'll find miles of trails with plenty of magnificent views and picnic points. How about a guided alpaca walk?

Whinlatter is accessible to everyone with inclusive play equipment, mobility scooter hire, and inclusive cycling. Be sure to check the website for more info before your trip.

Remember, mountain weather is unpredictable, so check the weather and come prepared!

Exhilarating Grizedale Forest ‘Go Ape’

If you and your family are looking for a bit of adrenaline, the Lake District is just the place for you, and you should definitely consider taking a trip to Go Ape Grizdale, just over 40 minutes from Newlands.

If you've never heard of Go Ape, think of tree-top adventure, zip wires, spectacular views, and perhaps wobbly legs for some.

Nestled between Coniston Water and Windermere lakes, this Go Ape location provides some seriously high courses with stunning mountains, lakes, and trees as your surroundings.

The Tree Top Challenge is an exciting high rope course with zip lines suitable for ages 10 and up. The Zip Trekking Adventure is suitable for ages 13 and above and offers nothing but sheer exhilaration.

If you're with a littler one, this location also offers a Treetop Adventure Plus for 6-10-year-olds.

But, if heights aren't for you, it looks like you'll be carrying the bags. Only joking! There are plenty of walking and cycling routes (and bike hire!) to get stuck into, as well as food and drink areas.

This location is dog-friendly, parking is available, and remember, sensible shoes and clothes are a must.

Book you and your family somewhere to rest after all your outdoor activities in and around the Lake District at Newlands Farm Stables.

With cosy beds to tuck into and fully-equipped kitchens for cooking up a hearty meal, it's the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure.

Lake District Water Activities for Families

If you're wondering what to do at the Lake District, you cannot possibly take a trip without having some fun on the water. The clue is in the name!

And don't worry, if swimming isn't your strong suit, you'll still find a way to enjoy the water.

Water-based activities are perfect for families looking for a good laugh while enjoying quality time together among the stunning natural scenery of the lakes.

From paddle boarding on tranquil waters to exploring hidden bays, water activities are a fantastic way to bask in the natural surroundings, learn new skills, and create memories to last a lifetime.

So, with options for all ages and experience levels, let's get into our recommended adventures.

Enjoy a Boat Cruise on Lake Windermere

Lake Windermere happens to be England's largest lake, at a whopping 10.5 miles long, with its deepest point sitting at 219 feet below. Now that's a big lake. It's around 50 minutes from Newlands Farm, depending on what port you arrive at.

With several villages and towns situated around the lake, exploring them is made possible with boat cruises. Ambleside, Bowness, and Elterwater are just some of the places you could voyage on your trip.

@windermerelakecruises From April 5th, you'll have even more chances to set sail with us! 🌊 Enjoy more cruises to Lakeside, Ambleside and Brockhole—including the return of our Green Cruise. 🌿 Plus, our iconic "steamers" MV Swan and MV Teal will be back on the water, alongside our beloved traditional wooden launches. 🚢✨ #WindermereLakeCruises #TheLakeDistrict #Spring #Windermere #Summer #Adventure ♬ original sound - Windermere Lake Cruises

If you choose to travel with Windermere Lake Cruises, you can take a cruise for 45 minutes to 3 hours. Or, if you've got your sea (lake) legs, you can stay aboard all day, hopping on and off at different points, taking in the beautiful bays, exquisite scenery, and woodland islands.

Tickets can be bought online or at the pier—so you can be as spontaneous as you like!

If you're heading to the lakes in the summer, you can't miss the chance to hop on a Saturday night buffet cruise. With food, live music, a bar, and a relaxing sunset, this experience can't be topped!

Head to the website to find a full list of cruises and fares and create the perfect trip for your family!

Watersports Fun in Coniston

Kayaking, canoeing, motor and rowing boats, and paddle boarding are the epitome of water sports here at the Lake District; visitors can't seem to get enough. Really, what better way is there to explore the lakes?

If you're travelling with young children or don't have someone to look after them for the day, you might want to serve this one. Or maybe you can find a child-friendly alternative, like Another Place's water sports for children in Ullswater.

Now, there are tons of places around the Lake District that offer watersports, including Derwentwater, Windermere, Ullswater, and Coniston. And that's not to mention the sheer number of centres that offer these activities.

We'd be here all day if we spoke about them all, so introducing Coniston Boating Centre, a not-for-profit organisation run by the Lake District National Park Authority, where all profits go towards keeping the landscape special for future generations.

Dogs are even welcome on their boats and paddle sports, so if you want to take your four-legged friend, be sure to check their website!

Before you head out to the water, you'll be instructed by fully trained staff and provided with safety equipment. So, if you're a first-timer, there's no need to worry.

Bookings can be made on their website. Booking during busy periods is essential to avoid disappointment!

Wild Swimming at Fell Foot

The Lake District is one of the best places to go wild swimming. If you're a particular kind of dare-devil (and prepared to brave the cold), why not take a trip just 20 minutes away from Newlands Farm Stables to Fell Foot?

Fell Foot is a stunning lakeshore park with mountain views, a cafe, watersports hire, a play area, and, of course, the perfect place for a spot of wild swimming.

It's easy to access, so it's perfect for first-timers who aren't totally comfortable getting in and out of the water. But if you're a weaker swimmer, it might be best to keep your legs firmly on the shore.

There are a few slipways and a jetty, allowing you to get used to the water before you dive straight in. Fell Foot also has some changing facilities, toilets, lockers, and showers.

Before you set off, remember to read the Lake District National Parks' guide to swimming so you can arrive with the right skills, equipment, and knowledge of the water.

There are loads of popular spots for wild swimming, so if you don't like the sound of this one, you'll definitely find plenty more!

Indoor Lake District Attractions for Families

Since the Lake District is in the notoriously drizzly UK, the weather can often put a damper on outdoor plans. This isn't always a bad thing—some of the most picturesque views can be found when it's raining. But it's not for everyone.

While the lakes can offer a fabulously fun time in the rain, we know that most of you enjoy being warm and dry without fear of forgetting your brolly.

So, without further ado, below are some indoor attractions the Lake District has to offer when the weather isn't cooperating or you just fancy a break from the great (but often tiring) outdoors.

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction

This should be on your to-do list, whether it's raining or otherwise. No trip to the Lake District is complete without paying homage to the late author, Beatrix Potter.

Located less than 25 minutes away from Newlands, The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is the perfect place to bring your little ones to enjoy an afternoon of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck and friends.

Named in the top 10 best family museums in Europe in 2024, this attraction isn't one to miss.

From short films to woodland recreations, virtual walks, and fascinating historical information, you and your children will have a whimsical time.

A visit to this unique attraction takes around 45-60 minutes, perfect for those with a shorter attention span. If you want to make the day a little longer, stop at the shop and have some lunch at the cafe!

Please note that dogs are not allowed inside the attraction building, except for assistance dogs. Tickets can be purchased online!

Eco-Friendly Lakes Aquarium

Just over 20 minutes away from Newlands Farm Stables is the Lakes Aquarium, aka fun for all the family.

It's home to various freshwater and marine life from around the world, and it has over 30 displays and interactive exhibits.

One of the main highlights at the Lakes Aquarium is the underwater tunnel, where you can walk through and experience being surrounded by water and swimming fish.

Other popular attractions include otter feeding sessions, penguin talks, and stingray encounters. If you're animal-obsessed, you'll love it here.

But it's not just about entertainment at the Lakes Aquarium – there's also plenty to learn about conservation and protecting our aquatic environments.

The aquarium is involved in various conservation projects, such as breeding programs for endangered species like seahorses and raising awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on marine life.

The Lakes Aquarium is committed to promoting sustainable practices and reducing its carbon footprint, making it a perfect destination for eco-conscious travellers.

Please beware that online tickets are non-refundable.

The Unique Rheged Centre

Last but not least, the Rheged Centre—the perfect place to take your kids on a rainy day in the Lake District.

Kids can enjoy creative workshops and interactive exhibitions, while adults can explore the unique artisan shops or indulge in locally sourced food at the café.

The on-site cinema often showcases a mix of independent films, family favourites, and thought-provoking documentaries, making it an enjoyable experience for all ages.

Whether you're seeking entertainment, culture, or just a relaxing day out, the Rheged Centre is a true hidden gem in the heart of the Lake District.
